Maribor out of contention for Europa League

Helsinki – Slovenian football champions Maribor have failed to qualify for the Europa League, having lost to HJK Helsinki 1:0 in the return leg of the third round of qualifying on Thursday. The score was 3:0 on aggregate.

While Maribor dominated the field, they failed to create scoring opportunities save for a few shots wide from a distance.

Their defence was patchy as well, allowing Helsinki to score through Santeri Hostikka in the 54th minute.

This is the fifth consecutive defeat for Maribor in the last five games and the seventh game in a row in which they failed to score a single goal.

The club, which currently ranks last in the domestic championship with a single win in four games, will now enter the qualifying for the third-tier Conference League.
