Mass Shooting in Montenegro Leaves 11 Dead

At least 11 people were killed and another six wounded, including two children and the attacker, and six more seriously wounded in the Montenegrin old capital of Cetinje after a mass shooting on Friday, the Montenegrin prosecution confirmed on Friday.

The massacre happened in the late afternoon and, according to the reports, most of the victims were neighbours and citizens walking near the town park. Unconfirmed reports say the attacker was a 34-year-old man from Cetinje.

It is confirmed that one police officer was wounded after the gunman started shooting at the police patrol which arrived at the crime scene. Media reported that the attacker was later taken down by police but the prosecution denied such claims, saying the gunman was killed by a citizen of Cetinje.

Montenegrin Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic said that the shooting was the worst the country has ever seen.

Abazovic called on citizens to support the families of the victims.

"I call on all the citizens of Montenegro to be with the families of the innocent victims, their relatives, friends and all the citizens of the royal capital of Cetinje," Abazovic said on Twitter. 

At least six of the wounded are hospitalised in Cetinje and in the country's capital, Podgorica, Three of them received life-threatening injuries.

Police are yet to confirm the identity of the gunman and details of the crime.

The government is expected to declare the three days of mourning following the deadly attack.
