Climber Janja Garnbret crowned European champion

Munich – Slovenia’s best climber Janja Garnbret was crowned the European champion in lead in Munich on Saturday, her second European champion title after winning one in combined in 2017. Garnbret is aiming for two more gold medals at the European Championships in Germany, in combined and bouldering.

The 23-year-old from Šmartno near the town of Slovenj Gradec outperformed her rivals in the semi-finals and final, although she did not reach the top of the course.

“It feels incredible. For many, the European Championships are just the European Championships, but not for me. This was probably the hardest match of all to win, but I’m very happy,” the champion said in her first reaction after her win, talking about her fall when she flew upside down for a few metres.

“I thought I was going to die,” she told the MMC news portal, stressing that she now has to prepare for Sunday’s bouldering, with the combined event to follow on Monday.

In the final, the Tokyo Olympic champion in combined, was awarded a 50+, followed by Austria’s Jessica Pilz (45+) and France’s Manon Hilly (41+).

Garnbret’s success was rounded off with the fourth place of the other Slovenian in the final, Mia Krampl.
