Dnevnik urges buying aircraft to fight fires

Ljubljana – Dnevnik newspaper says in Saturday’s commentary Attack from Air the Only Option that Slovenia urgently needs an aircraft to fight wildfires, stressing that climate change is here and dry summers are no longer in some distant future.

In both recent fires in the dry west – the fire in Kras region and the one on Socerb hill on the coast, Slovenin needed the aid of water bombers from Croatia and Italy.

Dnevnik says that the coming summer will be dry two, so there is no time to delay the purchase of a plane to fight fires. “We need it now!”

It doesn’t matter whether it is a Canadair or an Air Tractor or something else, this should be a decision for experts to make.

But the water bobber “must be ours, it must always be available, and it must bring sufficient amounts of water over the fire”.

Dnevnik notes that discussions about the need for an aircraft for fighting fires started 16 years ago when there was a big fire in Kras.

“Now we no longer have the next 16 years to make excuses why we cannot buy one and why a helicopter with an 800-litre water bag is enough. Otherwise we will be left without Kras, without Kras villages and Kras people.”
