Hikers warned against using navigation in mountains

Ljubljana – The Kranj Police Department has called on those heading to the mountains to use marked trails and official maps rather than resorting to GPS navigation, which can lead into dangerous situation.

The appeal comes after rescue teams had to rescue several hikers – all foreign citizens – in the area of Mt Vogel in the Julian Alps four times in the last month.

Police have also urged tourism workers hosting foreign tourists to advise them to stick to the marked routes or use mountain guides.

The route that was the reason for two of the four rescue operations has already been deleted from Google maps, the press release says.

In three of the cases, the hikers who got lost in the area under the Vogel ski slopes were led by Google maps to in impassable and dangerous terrain. One of the lost hikers meanwhile left an unmarked but well-trodden path and also strayed into dangerous and impassable terrain.

All of them were rescued with the help of police and military helicopters, and none of them was injured.
