Archbishop urges people to contribute to coexistence, peace

Brezje – Ljubljana Archbishop Stanislav Zore urged people to live by the word of God and contribute to coexistence, cooperation and peace as he delivered a sermon at the Basilica of St. Mary Help of Christians to mark the Feast of the Assumption.

Faced with decisions that clearly lack a common good, people could either turn away and pretend everything is fine, or start looking around to find the culprits for the situation humanity is in now. But this will not help improve things.

“We have to realise that everyone has the duty to do everything they can to foster coexistence, mutual cooperation and sincere efforts for peace among people, groups, political parties and nations,” he said.

At a time when “war is ravaging in Ukraine and so many other parts of the world” it is important to “turn to the word of God, read it, reflect on it and live by it,” he said.

The archbishop also touched on abortion and adoptions by same-sex couples in light of a recent Constitutional Court decision that allows same-sex couples to marry and adopt.

He quoted the words of Pope Francis who kindly asked each pregnant woman not to lose her internal joy of motherhood and not to allow fear, concern and others’ views to stifle this happiness.

As for same-sex adoptions, he said a child needed both a mother and a father. “A clear and precisely determined presence of both, the man and the woman, creates a space that is best for the child’s development,” he said, again referring to the words of Pope Francis.

The service attracted several thousand believers, much more than last year when Covid restrictions were in place. Throughout the day about 10,000 people are expected at Brezje, Slovenia’s most famous pilgrimage site.
