Short Film Festival kicks off in Ljubljana

Ljubljana – The 8th annual Short Film Festival (FeKK) is opening in Ljubljana on Monday to feature more than 160 shorts from 35 countries at various venues in the capital until Saturday, along with accompanying events.

The festival’s theme this year is Secret Life as organizers have sought to break away from anthropocentric film narratives to direct the viewer’s attention to secret and marginal perspectives.

Nature and its many dimensions will have the main role in the programme, along with “more emphatic and wholesome understanding of the world around us, past the dictatorship of capital and ideologies”.

The best of contemporary short-film production from the Balkan countries will be showcased in the international competition programme FeKK BAL.

Domestic production will be shown in the competitive programme FeKK SLO, which has been selected from a record 170 entries this year.

Serbian director Želimir Žilnik will make a guest appearance with a programme of shorts dubbed Political Lessons From West Germany, which had been considered lost until recently.

FeKK will also host Short Waves, Poland’s biggest festival of short film, and Croatian director Sunčica Ana Veldić, who as a professional vet makes her films from the animals’ perspective.

Apart from Classics and nominees for best European short film screened in the EFA Shorts programme, the festival will also see a series of curated discussions with film guests. For the first time this year it will also feature a programme for children and families Cinemini: Secret Life.

For professionals PROFeKK will see lectures, panel discussions and workshops in Škuc Gallery. Christian Gamst Miller-Harris, the English-Danish screenwriter who wrote the script for Helium, the 2014 Oscar winner for best short film, will give a workshop.

As part of the accompanying programme, an exhibition themed Nature is Healing by last year’s FeKK Grand Prix winner Sara Bezovšek will open on Tuesday at the Project Room SCCA in Metelkova.

The opening screening of four films at Kinodvor Cinema will be followed by a concert by young Slovenian band Masaž, who the organizers say spreads good vibrations.

Apart from Kinodvor, the festival venues include the summer stage of the Slovenian Cinematheque on the Museum Piazza in Metelkova, the Slovenian Cinematheque and other locations around the city.
