Third gold for Garnbret at European Championships

Munich – Janja Garnbret won gold in the new boulder & lead event on Wednesday, her third consecutive gold medal at the European Championships in Munich. Another Slovenian, Mia Krampl, finished in second place.

Garnbret left nothing to chance as she dominated both the boulder and the lead events: there were 200 points available in both events and she took home 199.9 points.

“It definitely feels incredible,” Garnbret said in her first remarks after the event. “Today was very mentally tough, but with the support of the crowd it was easier to compete.”

The boulder & lead will be a new Olympic event in Paris in two years and the 23-year-old said she is looking forward to the Olympic Games.

“It is definitely better than the [combined event] in Tokyo. I think it’s nice, I guess we’re ready,” she said.

Garnbret leaves the event with three gold medals, having already won the separate bouldering and lead events.

Krampl added to the Slovenian medal tally with silver today.

She was a surprise performed in the bouldering, where she took the second place, and was among only a handful of competitors to reach the top in the lead. She finished with 180.9 points.
