SD without own presidential candidate

Ljubljana – The coalition Social Democrats (SD) will not field their own candidate in the 23 October presidential election and the party will also not endorse any of the candidates running, the SD presidency decided on Monday. SD leader Tanja Fajon said the party might decide to endorse a candidate in a potential run-off.

The party registsred 71 potential candidates, but none of the, agreed to running for president. “If any of the candidates agreed to run and had enjoyed a wide support, we would have our own candidate,” Fajon told the press after the meeting.

In the past days there have been many enquiries as to whom the SD might endorse, “at leat from two female and two male candidates”, Fajon said.

The senior coalition Freedom Movement has expressed hope in the past that coalition parties, the SD and the Left, would endorse its vice-president Marta Kos.

Lawyer and ex-Information Commissioner Nataša Pirc Musar is to run as an independent, but has said she would not be averse to support from political parties.

Fajon said the party was currently focussing on the work of its ministers, as the government faces the cost of living crisis, and the upcoming local election. She underlined that the party would definitely put forward its own candidates in Ljubljana and Maribor, the two biggest cities.

Moreover, she said she would be running for party president again, “so that the party shows a united front”. The vote will be held at a congress in early October. Potential party leader candidates have until 30 August to apply.
