Slovenians will remember Gorbachev as great historic figure, president says

Ljubljana – President Borut Pahor and the Foreign Ministry responded to the death of last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev on Wednesday. Slovenians will remember Gorbachev as a great historic figure who understood the call for ending the Cold War, for democratic revival and European integration and cooperation, Pahor tweeted.

The president also extended his sincere condolences to Gorbachev’s family.

Similarly, the Foreign Ministry tweeted that Gorbachev would be remembered by his role in ending the Cold War and uniting Europe. His committent to peace is indispensable now more than ever, the ministry said.

The former Soviet leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate died in Moscow on Tuesday after a long disease.

Gorbachev resigned from his post on 25 December 1991 after failing to reform the country with his policies of perestroika (“restructuring”) and glasnost (“openness”).

Subsequently, the Soviet Union fell apart after 69 years.

He has left a mark as a man who had a significant role in ending the Cold War, allowed for the peaceful fall of the Iron Curtain and Communism in the Eastern bloc and for the independence of Soviet nations.
