Potočar wins home climbing race, Garnbret second

Koper – Slovenian climber Luka Potočar secured his first ever World Cup win in the lead as the world’s best climbers gathered in Koper on Saturday. In the women’s competition, triple European champion Janja Garnbret was second.

Potočar climbed to a height of 30+ on the brand new wall in Koper, the same as the Swiss competitor Sascha Lehmann, but won due to a better result in the semi-final. Yannick Flohe of Germany was third.

“This victory is really special for me. It’s my first in the World Cup and I’ve achieved it in front of the home crowd in Koper,” said Potočar, who won silver in the discipline at the recent European Championship.

Garnbret, meanwhile, finished in runner-up position in what was he first competition this year that she did not win, to end an 11-event winning streak.

“It did not work out according to plans,” she said, while noting that this was “the best event of the season” due to the spectacular crowd.

Ai Mori of Japan won the event and the American Brooke Raboutou finished third.
