Fajon pledges to reinforce Slovenia’s trade diplomacy

Celje – Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon has announced efforts to strengthen Slovenia’s network of diplomatic missions and increase the number of trade advisers working there, as she addressed the 11th Slovenian Trade Diplomacy Day at the International Trade Fair (MOS) in Celje, which features some 1,000 exhibitors from 20 countries.

The minister said on Wednesday that trade diplomacy is one of the key pillars of foreign policy and strengthening it is one of her priorities.

She said that foreign policy will cater to the needs of the Slovenian economy and its successful internationalisation to the greatest extent possible.

Fajon assured that diplomats will continue to engage strongly with Slovenia’s largest economic partners, such as Germany, neighbouring countries and the Western Balkans.

At the same time, opportunities in potential new markets in Central and South-East Asia and Africa will also be sought, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

“We are determined to help the Slovenian economy by opening doors in new markets”, which will also be done by opening new diplomatic missions where Slovenian companies are particularly interested in having them, she said.

“We will further strengthen the network of trade advisers at diplomatic missions and provide them with better working conditions,” the minister said.

There are currently 58 diplomatic missions and consulates abroad, but only 17 diplomats working on economic issues.

Fajon considers the figure too low, while Slovenian companies have also been warning it should increase. The minister thus pledged to promptly act.

Fajon’s introductory address was followed by a round-table at which energy business executives discussed the energy crisis.

The minister meanwhile used the opportunity to hold a meeting with them to offer them the support of the Slovenian diplomatic service.
