Slovenia, Germany to boost cooperation in defence

Ljubljana – Slovenia and Germany plan to sign a declaration on enhanced bilateral cooperation in defence, the Government Communication Office said as the cabinet took note of this decision at Thursday’s session.

The Slovenian and German defence ministries plan to define in the declaration the areas of future cooperation to improve operative cooperation and cooperation in exercises and training, interoperability and transferability in international operations and missions, and in armament.

The government noted that Germany was Slovenia’s strategic, political and most important economic partner with which Slovenia enhanced cooperation in defence in the past year.

The announcement of the declaration comes as the government decided to pull out of the EUR 281 million agreement on the purchase of 45 Boxer armoured personnel carriers from the OCCAR programme.

Prime Minister Robert Golob and Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon recently discussed the deal signed by former Defence Minister Matej Tonin with officials in Berlin with German Defence Minister Annalena Baerbock saying after the meeting with Fajon that there were no pressure on Ljubljana from Berlin regarding this matter.
