Šenk Homestead recognised at Constructive Alps competition

Ljubljana – Šenk Homestead in the Jezersko area in north-western Slovenia has received a special mention at the sixth international architecture competition Constructive Alps, held by Switzerland and Lichtenstein.

Out of 240 entries from seven countries, the jury recognised eleven projects as outstanding, said the Slovenian Environment and Spatial Planning Ministry.

The competition recognises constructions that boast the aesthetic typical for the Alpine region and incorporate nature conservation efforts.

The Constructive Alps Award for sustainably renovated and newly constructed buildings in the Alps went to the Feld school in Switzerland.

Šenk Homestead is at least 500 years old and has preserved its original buildings and architectural style. After a thorough renovation, which used local wood and kept the 500-year-old stone as the basic building block of the ground floor, the building is expected to have a long life with minimal regular maintenance costs, the ministry said.

The conversion into a tourist facility has given everyone the opportunity to see this architectural gem for themselves and to experience its heritage.

Other nominated projects from Slovenia were Hotel Bohinj and the wooden bicycle and pedestrian bridge in Bohinj.
