Slovenia aligned on 2021-2027 cohesion policy

Slovenia’s western cohesion region approved on Friday the programme of the European Cohesion Policy in 2021-2027, meaning the document has now been green-lit by all relevant stakeholders in Slovenia and will soon be sent to Brussels, said Minister for European Cohesion Policy Aleksander Jevšek.

The preparation and coordination of the 2021-2027 European Cohesion Policy programme and Slovenia’s partnership agreement with the European Commission have been a key task of the Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy since the beginning of this government’s term.

“We started this process in June, we started a dialogue with all stakeholders and this has produced a good result,” said Jevšek as quoted by his office in Friday’s press release.

Last week, when his office signed the agreement with European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira, the government adopted the programme unanimously, he added.

At the start of this week, eastern cohesion region Vzhodna Slovenija approved the programme, and the development council of western cohesion region Zahodna Slovenija followed suit today.

The document will now soon be forwarded to the European Commission. “This means we’re close to our goal. I’m confident that the programme will be approved by the European Commission by the end of the year, and that the drawing of funds under the next programming period can begin at the start of next year.”

The minister announced that his office would prepare a few solutions to simplify the procedures to review the use of EU funds, so that the money would be disbursed more quickly in a bid to improve EU fund absorption.

The 2021-2027 European Cohesion Policy programme and the partnership agreement are the two key documents enabling Slovenia to absorb some EUR 3.2 billion in the 2021-2027 financial perspective that ends in 2029.
