Fresh copy of first Slovenian silent feature-length film premiering in Ljubljana

Ljubljana, 18 October – A digital remastered copy of the first Slovenian silent feature-length film V Kraljestvu Zlatoroga (In the Realm of the Goldhorn) will premiere in Ljubljana’s Cankarjev Dom arts centre this evening. A quartet led by pianist Andrej Goričar, who wrote a new score for the film in 2005, will accompany the screening.

The film, remastered last year in honour of its 90th anniversary, was shot, directed and edited by mountaineer, pianist and composer Janko Ravnik and features some of the period’s leading mountaineers.

Its story is based on a hike to Triglav (2,864m), Slovenia’s highest mountain, by representatives of three classes – a student, an ironworker and a mountaineer. They meet foresters, grass mowers, charcoal burners and a young shepherdess.

The film, which took three and a half years to make, premiered on 29 August 1931 at the Grand Hotel Union in Ljubljana, where it was seen by 15,000 people over the next ten days. The premiere was accompanied by a 12-piece string orchestra, and later screenings by a smaller musical ensemble.
