Dnevnik wants Ljubljana to turn off Christmas lights

Ljubljana city authorities should use the energy crisis not only to drop Christmas lights but also reduce illumination of key buildings, including Ljubljana Castle and churches, to save energy and reduce light pollution, Dnevnik newspaper says in Tuesday’s commentary From Dusk to Dawn.

Some Slovenian municipalities have decided not to have any Christmas lights this year, while Ljubljana is unwilling to renounce Christmas lights and fireworks even during the energy crisis.

Mayor Zoran Janković stubbornly says it will not cost much, a mere EUR 3,000 for the entire holiday season, as he believes Ljubljana people also need to get merry during the crisis.

Ljubljana officials are bragging about the capital being green and environmentally-minded, but Dnevnik believes that the city should embrace the energy crisis to turn off the lights illuminating sights “to save energy and because of solidarity and the environment”.

There are no serious signs that the energy crisis will be used to reduce light pollution, so Ljubljana Castle remains illuminated all night long.

“If the Eiffel Tower is not illuminated all night, why should Ljubljana Castle be illuminated from dusk till dawn, regardless of an energy crisis,” says Dnevnik, adding that the city authorities ignore every such proposal while there is also no dialogue between Ljubljana residents and the city officials.
