Djokovic returns to Aussie Open, beats Carballes Baena in first round

MELBOURNE - Serbia's top-ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic has made a successful start to his quest for a tenth career Australian Open title by defeating Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday.

Returning to Melbourne after a two-year break, Djokovic was greeted by standing ovations from fans at the Rod Laver Arena.

The Serbian, who had a bandaged left thigh but looked fit to play, won after 122 minutes and an excellent display in the third set.

He will next face the winner of tie between Hugo Dellien and Enzo Couacaud.

The prize money at the season's first Grand Slam tournament is 53.3 mln dollars.
