Greek Journalists to Hold Strike for Justice for Train Crash Victims

They are also demanding that journalists be allowed to do their jobs without interference from media owners who usually have their own business agendas.

Other demands listed in a joint statement include better working conditions and salaries.

"Journalists and media workers must finally stop being hostages of unregulated working conditions and very low wages," the statement said.

The strike come one day before a strike by private and public sector workers on Thursday, also calling for those responsible for the train crash to be brought to justice.

Sotiris Triantaphyllou, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Editors' Unions, said that the journalists' associations are striking the day beforehand because they want to make sure that the public gets full information about the general strike.

"Journalists are members of society, so we are joining our voice with society and the trade union movement and participating in the strikes. We demand full justice for this tragic train accident. In addition, we demand public interest journalism without intrusive agendas, collective labour agreements in all media, and free and independent information," Triantafillou told BIRN.
