Moldova Condemns ‘Russian Plan’ to Regain Control of Country

Deputies of the ruling party in Moldova have condemned what they term Russia's plans to regain control of the country after investigative media published a series of what appeared to be official Russian documents on how Moscow plans to maintain its influence in Chisinau and derail its relationship with the West.

The Action and Solidarity Party deputy, PAS, Oazu Nantoi, told BIRN that Russia was betting on Socialist leader and ex-president Igor Dodon regaining control of the country. "Russia continues to insist on dividing and antagonising our society," Nantoi said.

"We see this in polls which say that about 30 per cent of our fellow citizens remain under the influence of Russian propaganda and operate with its clichés. This is the main danger to national security," Nantoi, a member of parliament's Security and Defence Committee said.

Journalists from RISE Moldova presented a series of documents from the presidential administration in the Kremlin that reveal Russia's plans to draw Moldova into its sphere of influence by 2030.

One document is called "Strategic objectives of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Moldova" and was created in the fall of 2021, when a new ro-European majority was installed in Chisinau following the July 2021 elections, involving the contribution of the General Staff of the Russian Army and the intelligence services, the FSB, SVR and GRU.

The document allegedly refers to Russian strategic objectives in the political, military, military-technical and security spheres.

Several key points from this strategy have been reflected in recent years in the political programs of the pro-Russian parties in Chisinau and in the speeches of some politicians, including ex-president Dodon.
