Vucic: I proposed reinstatement of capital punishment but gov't is against that

BELGRADE - Speaking to reporters after last night's shooting spree in Mladenovac that left eight people dead, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he had proposed a reinstatement of the capital punishment but that the government was against the move.

"Let me tell you, this morning I proposed to the PM that we reinstate the capital punishment, but she and the government are against that because we would be the only country in Europe besides Belarus to have capital punishment, which we cannot have under some smart conventions," Vucic said.

"I, too, used to be against capital punishment, and I deeply regret having had such a political position," he noted.
