Captains identify risks in 102 ports and call for improvements

The Panhellenic Union of Merchant Marine Captains (PENEN) is calling for improvements in a total of 102 ports on islands and mainland Greece, including those in Piraeus and Rafina, according to the Ports Report 2024.

The report, accompanied by maps and photographs taken by captains from various companies, highlights the “extremely difficult situations” they face when trying to approach these ports.

Although PENEN acknowledges in its letter to the Ministry of Shipping and the Coast Guard that efforts have been made to improve the ports through the Ports Planning and Development Committee (PPDC), Greek captains emphasize that “the overall picture requires solutions that will help eliminate existing problems.”

In its over 100-page report, PENEN details issues ranging from changing light bulbs in lighthouses and signal towers to constructing new piers or dredging their basins.
