Digital crackdown on overprescriptions
A doctor in Mytilene on the island of Lesvos has been accused of overprescribing hundreds of medications to her family, including three different cholesterol drugs for her 15-year-old daughter.
In total, the physician issued 705 prescriptions for 1,818 pills during the first eight months of 2024.
This incident was one of many uncovered by health authorities using advanced business intelligence (BI) and anti-fraud systems that help detect suspicious prescribing patterns more efficiently as part of the effort to curb overmedication and restore integrity to the healthcare system.
Similar cases include a pediatrician in Thessaloniki who prescribed 300 drugs to children, and a cardiologist in Nea Michaniona who issued 500 medications.
