Police officer accused of killing 68-year-old in hunting accident released on bail

A police officer accused of negligent manslaughter following the fatal shooting of a 68-year-old man in central Greece was granted conditional release on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Saturday morning in the countryside of Kakoplevri, a village near the town of Kalambaka, while the 68-year-old was out picking wild edible greens and the police officer was out hunting with a group of friends.

He told the magistrate that he did not see the other man who was crouched down close to the ground when he deployed his shotgun, accidentally hitting the 68-year-old.

This is the second incident of this kind in which the same police officer was involved following the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old boy in 2022 by another member of his hunting party.

Under the terms of his parole, he is not allowed to leave the country or to hunt. He was suspended from duty...
