Spain: Police seize record quantity – 13 tons of cocaine in banana shipment from Ecuador

Spanish police seized a record-breaking 13 tons of cocaine on October 14 in Algeciras, a southern Spanish port. The drugs were hidden within a shipment of bananas from Ecuador.

This discovery sets a new record, surpassing the 9.4 tons of cocaine found at the same port in 2023. Algeciras, one of Europe’s largest container ports, has frequently been targeted by drug traffickers.

Antonio Jesús Martínez, head of the National Police’s Central Narcotics Brigade, clarified that the quantity was far too large for Spain’s market alone and was likely intended for distribution throughout Europe. Spanish authorities acted on a tip from Ecuadorian officials, who had identified the suspicious cargo.

A woman linked to the importing company was arrested, while two company directors remain at large.
