SYRIZA MP Kyriaki Malama latest party exit  

SYRIZA MP Kyriaki Malama has announced her departure from the main opposition leftist party to serve as an independent MP.

This development reduces SYRIZA's representation in the 300-member Parliament to 31 seats, matching the number held by the socialist party PASOK. 

Her move comes in the wake of exits by three other SYRIZA lawmakers, Alexandros Avlonitis, Petros Pappas and Rallia Christidou, supporters of Stefanos Kasselakis, the former SYRIZA leader.  

Kasselakis, who announced Friday night that he is leaving the party after the party's congress made it clear it would refuse to consider his candidacy for the leadership election to be held later this month, is expected to announce a new party early Saturday afternoon. 

Kasselakis supporters claimed that numerous delegates were excluded from a SYRIZA party congress on Friday.
