Migrant surge via new routes

Greece is witnessing a surge in migrant arrivals via new sea routes, straining resources. Migrants land daily on Gavdos (off Crete) and Rhodes.

In response, the Migration Ministry is planning short-term accommodation facilities on Crete and Rhodes. Overcrowded official reception centers on Lesvos, Samos, Chios, Leros, and Kos are operating beyond capacity, with new arrivals transported directly to Athens before being distributed to mainland facilities.

The Municipality of Hania on Crete has spent over €120,000 on food, shelter and medical care for 2024 arrivals, while creating a temporary stay facility to avoid street camping. Additionally, Rhodes continues to receive migrants, with the ministry seeking new facility locations.

The evolving route brings young Egyptians, Pakistanis, Sudanese, Afghans and Bangladeshis, with recent arrivals from Yemen.
