Bad weather Bora: Meteo warning for heavy snowfall at the weekend

The weather will deteriorate rapidly with EMS issuing an emergency bulletin for severe weather Bora.

The National Observatory warns in its latest forecast that the main feature of bad weather Bora during Saturday Nov. 30 and Sunday Dec. 1 will be heavy snowfall.

Snowfall will be located in the continental mountains, especially in Central and Northern Greece, as well as in lower altitude areas of Western Macedonia. Heavy snowfall and high snow depths are expected in the city of Florina.

The forecast map shows the geographical distribution and the estimated cumulative snow depth in the country until noon on Sunday 1 December:

The forecast for the second half of Sunday, 1 January 2013, is as follows.

Earlier, Meteo in its forecast warned that the risk of the rainfall episode is at category 5. According to the forecast, the two-day period Saturday 30/11 and Sunday 1/12 will see severe weather across almost the entire country with:

  1. Heavy and locally persistent rainfall and thunderstorms.
  2. Local hail, mainly in the west, central and south.
  3. Snow in the continental highlands, as well as in areas of Western Macedonia with lower altitude.

Winds will be very strong from the south on Saturday 30/11. Gusty eastern northeastern winds in the North Aegean, Thermaikos and in areas of Macedonia (mainly Chalkidiki and Pieria) from Saturday evening 30/11

The reason for this change in weather will be an atmospheric disturbance in the middle troposphere which is expected to be cut off (cold lake) from the general atmospheric circulation and move slowly, initially towards the Southern Ionian Sea, and then towards the Southern Aegean Sea. The slow movement of the cold lake and the barometric low associated with it will result in strong and persistent phenomena in many areas of the country.

Snow will fall in the northern highlands. Winds will blow from the south and locally in the north from the north, 4 to 6 and in the seas locally 7 Beaufort. From the afternoon in the east will reach locally 8 and in the northeast 9 Beaufort.

Snow will fall in the mountains of the northern and central parts of the country. In fact, snowfall is also expected in the mountains of Macedonia and Epirus in semi-mountainous areas, while in the mountains of these regions it will be dense.

The temperature will drop almost all over the country. It will reach 12 to 14 degrees Celsius in Macedonia, Thrace and Epirus (in the northwest 8 to 10 degrees Celsius), in the Ionian Sea, the northern Aegean, the central and southern mainland 15 to 17 degrees Celsius and only in the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese 18 to 20 degrees Celsius.
