Tragedy in Xanthi: “We mourn and hope they will pull through,” says the children’s aunt

The two sisters, aged 15 and 18, remain intubated in Intensive Care Units at Thessaloniki’s Hippocrates Hospital after being found unconscious on Friday morning, along with their two siblings, in a house in Magiko, Xanthi, following a gas leak.

The incident claimed the life of their 16-year-old brother. The condition of the 15- and 18-year-old girls is described by doctors as critical but stable, and they are in a medically induced coma.

Meanwhile, as revealed Friday afternoon by the children’s aunt, the family’s fourth child, a 20-year-old, is hospitalized in Kavala without life-threatening injuries. The mother is also in good condition and remains hospitalized in Xanthi.

“We mourn the loss of Pantelis, and at the same time, we hope the doctors will do their best, and the children will emerge victorious and overcome this,” said their aunt, who traveled to the Thessaloniki hospital for updates on their condition.

Speaking to protothema.gr, the children’s uncle and the mother’s brother-in-law noted that the tragic accident appears to have been caused by a gas leak. The family had recently moved into the house, with all the children sharing a room while the mother stayed in another room.

Making the story even more heart-wrenching is that the 47-year-old mother has been raising her four children alone since her husband passed away in 2009 from a stroke. On Friday, she also lost her 17-year-old son.

Investigations by the Police in Xanthi and the recently installed gas tank

Meanwhile, the circumstances of the tragic event are under investigation by the Xanthi Police Department in cooperation with the Fire Department.

As part of the inquiry, an autopsy was ordered for the 16-year-old’s body, and toxicological tests will also be conducted.

Additionally, a technical inspection has been ordered for the gas installation, reportedly installed just the day before.

According to police sources cited by xanthinews, the area where the children’s bedrooms were located had poor ventilation. The previous day, work had been carried out outside the house to install a gas tank. The case is being closely monitored by the Xanthi Prosecutor’s Office.

She went to wake her children and found them unconscious

The tragedy came to light early in the morning when the 47-year-old mother went downstairs to wake her children and found them unconscious after a gas leak. A few hours later, the unfortunate 17-year-old passed away.
