Oil transfer completed after Houthi attack on tanker Sounion

The transfer of approximately 150,000 tons of crude oil from the Greek-flagged Suezmax tanker Sounion to Delta Blue at the Suez anchorage has been successfully completed.

Maritime sources report that the operation was executed with the support of the Greek tugboat Aigaion Pelagos.

The Sounion had been attacked by Yemen's Houthis in the Red Sea on August 21, resulting in significant damage, loss of power, and a fire onboard. Efforts to tow the vessel were initially suspended after the companies involved deemed the situation unsafe.

The Houthis, claiming solidarity with Palestinians amid the Israel-Gaza war, detonated additional charges on the tanker after the attack, igniting further fires.

Experts had warned that a spill from the Sounion could have become the largest in recorded history, posing a severe threat of environmental catastrophe.
