Syrians celebrate Assad’s downfall in central Athens
Hundreds of Syrians _ mostly men and a few veiled women _ living in Athens converged on Syntagma Square early Sunday afternoon to celebrate the downfall of Bashar al-Assad.
The gathering took place while thousands of people who took advantage of shops being open on Sunday thronged the square.
The Syrians were waving flags carrying the colors of the rebels, along with a few Palestinian flags, and shouted slogans. Some flag-festooned cars were making the rounds, honking.
This is a day of joy and liberation, a Syrian who has been living in Athens over the past ten years told Kathimerini.
