Defense minister requests management overhaul in military hospitals

Minister of Defense Nikos Dendias asked the head of the Greek Armed Forces to conduct a full review of the management of military hospitals after two patients revealed they had received months-long delayed cancer diagnosis at the same health facility. 

In one case, a 55-year-old police officer said he is pursuing legal action against two doctors at the 424 General Military Hospital in Thessaloniki after undergoing surgery for acute appendicitis in December, 2022, only to be informed a year later, based on biopsy results, that he had cancer.

Testifying for the officer, a 65-year-old retired colonel revealed that in June 2019, he underwent surgery to remove a growing lump discovered a month earlier, but found out several months later that he had been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
