Canberra Greeks mark anniversary of Greece’s stunning Euro 2004 victory

Soccer icons Giorgos Karagounis, Theodoros Zagorakis and Angelos Charisteas were the guest stars of a special event in the Australian capital on Tuesday celebrating the 20th anniversary of Greece's stunning victory at the European Soccer Championship in 2004.  

The event was organized by the Hellenic Club of Canberra, in partnership with the city's Greek Orthodox Community and Church (GOCCC) and the Canberra Olympic Football Club, the Greek Herald reported.

Participants had the opportunity to dine and mingle with the special guests, who shared their stories and answered questions.

Greece, captained by Zagorakis, defeated Portugal 0-1 on its home turf in the final in Lisbon with a goal by Charisteas in the 57th minute. Karagounis had scored the first of two winning goals in the opening match against the hosts.
