The sad saga of Greek industrial shutdowns has continued this summer with the compulsory sale of the flagship A.G. Petzetakis plant and the failed tender of Hellenic Steel in Thessaloniki by its Italian owner.

Museums, archaeological sites to hold special events for full moon

A total of 115 museums and archaeological sites across Greece will be open to the public with free admission and special events for the full moon on the evening of August 7. Others will hold events from August 5 to 9. In Attica, the Acropolis will be open until 8 p.m. and Sounio until midnight.

Skopelos jilted as Mamma Mia! moves to Croatia

A sequel to the blockbuster film "Mamma Mia!" - featuring a starr-studded cast singing songs by chart-topping band ABBA - will be made in Croatia and not Greece due to money constraints, according to the UK's Daily Mail.

In an effort to crack down on sexism in the workplace, the General Secretariat for Gender Equality is preparing a TV advertisement aimed at raising public awareness about the issue, and to explain what sort of behavior is considered harassment.

Firefighters battle blaze in eastern Attica

Firefighters were struggling to contain a large brushfire in the Kalyvia area southeast of Athens Monday. According to authorities, no residential areas were under threat Monday evening.

According to the fire department, some 70 firefighters were involved in the effort, assisted by five dropping-water helicopters and 30 fire engines.

Pelicans released back in the wild

A rosy pelican and two Dalmatian pelicans - both of which are endangered species - were returned to their natural habitat after receiving treatment for injuries and being tagged with a tracking device.

Alarm raised over detention of unaccompanied minor refugees

An investigation conducted by the Greek Ombudsman from July 17 to 19 has revealed what it describes as "blatant violations of the rights of unaccompanied, underage refugees and migrants."

The independent authority referred to prolonged detention in unsafe and inappropriate conditions at police stations and refugee centers across northern Greece as the main violations.

Parliament speaker skirts protester arrest question by citing protocol

Parliament Speaker Nikos Voutsis on Monday accused the Greek Police of failing to follow procedure after remanding about a dozen members of the Rouvikonas anarchist group who bypassed Parliament security last week and entered the courtyard of the building in Athens.
