Europe Braces for New Refugee Influx From Turkey

European countries close to Turkey were on the alert on Friday after Ankara said it was opening its borders for migrants and refugees who want to leave the country and cross into Europe.

Since Ankara announced the decision, thousands of mainly Middle Eastern refugees have flocked to cities close to the border with Bulgaria and Greece as well as to ports on the Aegean Sea.

Wrong approach

The first measure that needed to be taken in tackling the resurgence of the migration crisis was to transfer asylum applicants to the mainland.

Apart from practical, it would have sent the message that the rest of the country was sharing the islanders' burden.

Street markets to operate Saturday, Clean Monday

Street markets will operate Saturday and on Clean Monday according to Attica's federation representing street market vendors.
According to the federation's president, Dimitris Moulatos, markets will be fully stocked to meet increased demand ahead of the three-day break.

Migrants and refugees started gathering at the Greek-Turkish land border after Turkey warned that it would let out thousands of refugees stuck in the country since a 2016 accord between Ankara and the European Union.

Kosovo Unveils Statue to First Olympic Gold Medalist Kelmendi

Kosovo Olympic gold medalist Majlinda Kelmendi on Friday attended the unveiling of a bronze statue of herself in judo kit in her hometown of Peje, about 50 miles west of the capital Pristina.

The 30-year-old judoka made history in the Rio 2016 Olympics when she became the first athlete from Kosovo to bring home a gold in the country's first-ever Olympic participation.
