A court in Athens on Saturday deferred the trial of the man charged with stabbing a dog in the stomach earlier in the month in Nikaia, western Athens, to November 6.

Six new taxi ranks for capital

As part of an initiative by City Hall aimed at facilitating both commuters and taxi drivers in downtown Athens, six new taxi ranks are being set up in key streets.

The new ranks - which come in addition to an existing five - will be on Sofokleous, Evripidou, Omirou and Sina streets, as well as at Monastiraki and Agion Asomaton squares.

President Erdoğan slams Macron, says he needs ’mental checks’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Oct. 24 slammed his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, over his policies toward Muslims, saying that he needed "mental checks."

"What can one say about a head of state who treats millions of members from different faith groups this way: first of all, have mental checks," Erdoğan said in a televised address.

Virus spread 'aggressive' in the north

A day after Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis heralded new restrictions to curb a sharp spike in coronavirus infections, the latest figures indicate that the upward trend shows no signs of abating, with epidemiologists warning of an "aggressive" increase in northern Greece, while cases are up 40 percent in Attica since last week. 

Police break up crowds outside church in Thessaloniki

Police intervened on Friday night to break up large groups of people who had gathered at the front of a church in the centre of Thessaloniki, in northern Greece, disregarding a ban on public gatherings due to the pandemic.

Officers in car patrols who arrived at the church of Aghia Sophia shortly after 1 a.m. warned citizens through loudspeakers against overcrowding.

EU tourism fared better than foreign travel

Domestic tourism in the European Union is recovering faster from the Covid-19 crisis than foreign tourism, the EU's statistical office Eurostat said on Friday.

The number of nights spent by EU residents in tourist accommodations in their own country for July was only 22% lower than in 2019, while it was 64% lower for residents from other countries, Eurostat said.
