New Turkish Cypriot president sworn into office

Ersin Tatar, the newly elected president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), was sworn into office on Oct. 23. 

Tatar was welcomed by Teberruken Ulucay, the parliament speaker, for his swearing-in at the General Assembly in the nation's capital Lefkosa.  Representing Turkey at the ceremony was Fuat Oktay, the Turkish vice president.

New virus infections remain above 800 for third day

New SARS-CoV-2 infections remained above 800 for a third day on Friday, reaching 841, while the total number rose to 29,057, Greek health authorities announced.

Infections broke a fresh record on Thursday with 882 new cases.

Of the new cases, 43 were imported, detected at the country's entry points.

Turkey Tested Russian S-400s Defense System Confirmed Erdogan

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan confirmed on Friday that Turkey had been testing the S-400 air defense systems that it bought from Russia and said U.S. objections on the issue did not matter according to Reuters.

England adds Mykonos, Canary Islands, Denmark to safe travel list

England will add Spain's Canary Islands, the Maldives, Denmark and the Greek island of Mykonos to its safe travel list from Oct. 25, transport minister Grant Shapps said on Thursday, meaning arrivals from those destinations will not face quarantine.

Liechtenstein was removed from the safe travel list, Shapps added.

US suspends visa services in Turkey over possible attacks

The U.S. said on Oct. 23 it has decided to suspend visa services at its missions in Turkey after it received "credible reports of potential terrorist attacks."

The embassy in Ankara said in a statement on its website that consular services would be suspended at the embassy as well as consulates in Istanbul, the southern city of Adana and the Aegean coastal city of Izmir.
