France's Deauville American film fest opens with Twin Peaks' Laura Dern

The 43rd edition of France's Deauville American Film Festival opened late on Sept. 1 in the Normandy seaside resort with a tribute to American actress Laura Dern.

The festival, a showcase for American cinema, will run for ten days and offer 14 films in the official competition. Dern appeared on the red carpet in a dress covered in blue and white feathers.

Hungarian film director Karoly Makk dies aged 91

Cannes prize-winning director Karoly Makk died Wednesday at the age of 91, Hungary's Szechenyi Academy of Literature and Arts told the state news agency MTI.

Widely regarded as one of Hungary's greatest post-World War II directors, Makk gained a reputation for fearlessly tackling themes of political and sexual repression during the country's four-decade communist period.

French Police Arrested 150 Migrants at Cannes Station

French police have detained 156 illegal migrants at a station in Cannes, southeast France, the BFM-TV television channel reported.

According to local authorities, most of the migrants are from Sudan. They had a plan to go to Marseilles to apply for asylum. They also traveled with the famous French activist Cedric Eru, who was also detained.

New Moment wins 4th Cannes Lion for "One Book for Peace"

Regional agency New Moment tonight won its fourth Lion in Cannes this week – Gold in Design for the project “One Book for Peace."

After winning two bronze and one silver Lion in the categories Print, PR and Promo & Activation for the project The One Book for Peace, New Moment brings home the Cannes Gold.

Swedish director winner of 70th Cannes Festival

It was not a great festival. Among the 19 features selected for the competition in Cannes, there were quite a number of "mediocre" films, besides some good films. I had three favorites: "Loveless" by Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev, "Happy End" by Austrian Michael Haneke and "The Square" by Swedish director Ruben Östlund.
