Constanta mayor, SocDem Radu Mazare under preventive arrest for 30 days
The justices with the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ) have decided on Thursday the 30-day arrest pending trial of Constanta mayor, social-democrat Radu Mazare, under investigation by the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) for bribery, interest conflicts and abuse in office.

CFR Calatori: 2 for 1 train tickets on Valentine's Day, Dragobete for sea, mountain destinations
CFR Calatori, Romania's national passenger railway carrier, is selling train tickets with a 50-per cent discount for journeys that start in Bucharest and end in Prahova Valley or Constanta, on Valentine's Day and Dragobete (traditional Romanian love celebration - February 24), CFR Calatori reported on Wednesday.

Fact box: King of Romanian soccer Gheorghe Hagi celebrates 50th birthday
Nicknamed the 'King of Romanian soccer' and the 'Maradona of the Carpathians', retired football ace Gheorghe Hagi was born on February 5, 1965, in the commune of Sacele, located 35 km from the eastern city of Constanta.

Bulgaria's Deputy Chief of Defense Dies Aged 53
Deputy Chief of Defense Neyko Nenov passed away on Wednessday, the Defense Ministry has said.
Maj Gen Nenov was suffering from a brain tumor which was the cause of this death despite undergoing surgery last year.

Helicopter Crash Kills Four in Romania
All four people on board of an emergency rescue helicopter, which crashed into a lake near the southeastern city of Constanta, have died, the Romanian Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday.

DIICOT conducts searches in relation to Petrolul Ploiesti football club
Prosecutors of the Organised Crime and Terrorism Investigation Directorate (DIICOT) are conducting today several searches of addresses in the counties of Constanta, Prahova, Buzau, Salaj, Giurgiu, Braila and Bucharest City in a case of tax evasion and money laundering. The searches also regard managers of the Petrolul Ploiesti football club.
NATO Warships to Drop Anchor in Bulgaria's Varna
Canadian HMCS Toronto and Spanish ESPS Almirante Juan de Borbón are to arrive at the Black Sea city of Varna on Friday, the Bulgarian Navy has reported.
The unofficial routine visit two vessels from the 2nd Standing NATO Maritime Group are to have an unofficial routine visit at the port until September 22.

Romania's Muslims prepare to celebrate end of Ramadan

ECHR hands down sentence against Romania for detention conditions
Romania was sentenced by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to pay 7,000 euro in material damage to Romanian citizen Mircea Dan Butiuc for the degrading treatment he was subjected to during his detainment in the Poarta Alba penitentiary, a release of the ECHR informs.
First high-speed train to Black Sea Coast travels 225 km in 115 minutes
The first train of the summer transport schedule running with 160 km/h has made it to Constanta City, some 225 km from Bucharest, in one hour and 55 minutes, a speed record for the Romanian railway transport, according to Adrian Vlaicu, executive manager of CFR Calatori, the passenger division of the public railway company.
