Sweltering heat in Vietnam’s north sparks power cuts

Hanoi residents flocked to the Vietnamese capital's air-conditioned shopping malls on June 3 to escape power cuts at home, as the grid struggled to cope with the high demand caused by soaring heat.

Vietnam is one of many countries across South and Southeast Asia experiencing record-high temperatures in recent weeks.

The temperature rose to 36 degrees Celsius.

Vietnam discovers new hybrid virus variant

Vietnam has discovered a new COVID-19 variant which spreads quickly by air and is a combination of the Indian and British strains, health officials confirmed on May 29.

The country is struggling to deal with fresh outbreaks across more than half of its territory, including industrial zones and big cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam ratified a landmark trade deal on June 8 with the European Union that is expected to energize the country's manufacturing sector and exports, as it recovers from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. 

Lawmakers approved the agreement in their first National Assembly session since the pandemic began.
