Fire breaks out near Karystos on Evia
A fire was reported near the town of Karystos on the island of Evia on Friday afternoon. The blaze is burning in difficult terrain in a wooded area, with strong winds blowing.
The Hellenic Fire Service mobilized 27 firefighters, nine vehicles, one airplane and two helicopters to put out the fire. There are no homes being threatened according to the HFS.

Firefighting plane crash kills two pilots
The wildfires raging on the islands of Rhodes, Evia, Corfu and several locations in mainland Greece caused the first human casualties Tuesday.
Two Greek Air Force pilots died on the island of Evia when a Canadair CL-215 firefighting plane crashed near the town of Karystos shortly after 2 p.m., an Air Force spokesman announced.

A large fire is in progress that broke out in the early hours of Monday in Fygias Karystos in Evia, while through 112 an order was given for the preventive evacuation of the settlements of Kokkini and the Doctors' Building Cooperative. A few minutes ago, a precautionary evacuation order was given for Marmari as well.

With a total amount of 10,150,000 euros, 22 Municipalities, two municipal enterprises and four Regions of the country are subsidized, to support the fire victims and the restoration of the damages from the fires of the last weeks.
Gale-force winds destroy wind turbines in Evia
Several wind turbines near the coastal town of Karystos in southern Evia were destroyed by wind gusts recorded in the region in the past few days, a local TV channel reported Thursday.
The undefined number of wind turbines, found broken and on the ground, were located inside the Katsaroni wind park.

Ancient site found in south Evia
Recent finds on the island of Evia are believed to date to the 6th century BC, the Culture Ministry said on Tuesday.
The items were discovered during survey work for the installation of a wind park in an area 3 kilometers from the village of Yiannitsi in the municipality of Karystos.

Dry and windy conditions fuel wildfires
Firefighters on Friday battled several large blazes in different parts of the country as strong winds and dry conditions hampered their efforts to bring them under control.
Dozens of firefighters were sent to a fire that broke out at around 2 a.m. on Friday near the town of Karystos, in southern Evia, and were aided by water-dropping aircraft at the break of dawn.
