Man arrested for illegal excavation at Philippi archaeological site
A 53-year-old man has appeared before a prosecutor in the northern city of Kavala on suspicion of conducting an illegal excavation at the archaeological site of Philippi.
Police said the man, equipped with a metal detector, earphones, a small carving tool and an improvised digging tool, conducted the illegal dig on the site on Wednesday evening.
Car crash in Kavala leaves 61-year-old passenger dead
One dead and one injured after a car crash outside the northern city of Kavala on Saturday night.
According to the police, the car hit a signpost and then fell into a ditch. The 33-year-old driver and the 61-year-old passenger, both of Albanian descent, escaped the crashed car and were transferred to the hospital.
The 61-year-old man died later at the hospital.

Lightning strike kills one man, severely injures another during nighttime race in northern Greece
One man died and another was severely injured by a lightning strike early Sunday morning during a nighttime endurance race along six peaks of the Falakro mountain range, in the northern Greece prefecture of Drama.
Ukrainian Plane with "Dangerous Cargo" Crashed near Kavala Greece
An An-12 plane of a Ukrainian airline carrying "dangerous" cargo crashed shortly before 11 p.m. last night in northern Greece near the town of Paleochori, about 40 km from Kavala.

Cargo plane operated by Ukraine carrier crashes in Greece
An Antonov cargo plane operated by a Ukrainian airline crashed Saturday near the city of Kavala in northern Greece, authorities said. Local residents reported seeing a fireball and hearing explosions for two hours after the crash.

Greece pushes back bid deadline for offshore gas storage facility
Greece has pushed back by a month a deadline for investors to bid for a contract to run an underground gas storage facility in the northern Aegean Sea.
Privatisation agency HRADF (or TAIPED), which manages the concession, said late on Tuesday that it had extended the deadline for initial bids to Sept. 30 from Aug. 31, without giving a reason for the delay.
