Mexico: Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 90

The death toll from the massive earthquake that struck Mexico on Thursday night has risen to at least 90 after emergency services in the southern state of Oaxaca said late on Saturday there had been 71 confirmed fatalities in the state alone.

"It's 71 (dead). Just for Oaxaca," said Jesus Gonzalez, a spokesman for the state civil protection authority.

Officials in Mexico are scrambling to respond to a 8.1 magnitude earthquake off the country's southern coast that has killed at least 61 people and triggered tremors across the region, according to The Independent. 

The most powerful earthquake to strike in around 100 years saw with tremors reported from Mexico City to San Salvador to the south.

An earthquake described by Mexico's president as the country's strongest in a century has struck off the southern coast, killing at least 33 people.

The quake, which President Enrique Peña Nieto said measured 8.2, struck in the Pacific, about 87km (54 miles) south-west of Pijijiapan.

The epicentre was about 87km (54 miles) south-west of the town of Pijijiapan and at a depth of 70km, the United States Geological Survey said.

A tsunami warning has been issued for Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras.
