Afghan boy aged 5 killed by truck near Moria migrant camp

A 5-year-old Afghan boy was accidentally run over by a truck near the migrant and refugee camp of Moria on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos on Tuesday.

According to preliminary reports from state broadcaster ERT, the boy was inside a cardboard box that the truck driver ran over while turning into the parking lot of a business where he was making a delivery.

Pope Francis' charity offers 100,000 euros for migrants

Pope Francis has offered 100,000 euros to the Greek branch of the Catholic humanitarian organisation Caritas to support its work with refugees and migrants on the islands.
The amount was delivered to Caritas Hellas by the Papal Αlmoner, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, who visited the state reception facility for migrants near the village of Moria in Lesvos.

Lesvos asylum staff ring alarm bell

Employees of the asylum service on Lesvos have rung the alarm bell over conditions on the eastern Aegean island as official figures show that more than 11,000 migrants are currently residing at local facilities, more than twice the maximum capacity.

The arrival on the island of 615 migrants in the past three days pushed the total number of asylum seekers on Lesvos to 11,053.

Syrian teen shot by farmer in Lesvos

A Syrian asylum seeker was hospitalized on Tuesday after being shot in the head and legs by a farmer on the island of Lesvos.

Police said the perpetrator, a resident of the village of Moria, shot the 16-year-old in the presence of his brother and parents for unknown reasons at a farm north of the reception and identification center named after the village.

More migrants living in tents on Lesvos amid rising tensions

This escalated into violence earlier in the week but police did not intervene with tear gas as they have done in the past due to the presence of more than 1,000 children at the camp.

Couple detained for selling drugs to migrants on Lesvos

Coast guard officers on Lesvos detained a municipal employee and his partner Thursday in connection with allegations that they have been selling drugs to migrants living in the island's main refugee camp near the village of Moria.

According to sources, authorities found around 300 grams of cannabis in the couple's possession.

Northern Aegean governor warns of 'unmanageable situation' at migrant camps

In comments following a large fire possibly started during a riot at a migrant processing center on the island of Lesvos on Monday night, the regional governor for the Northern Aegean, Christiana Kalogirou, warned of an 'unmanageable situation' on the islands bearing the brunt of the refugee crisis.
