OLAF, the European Anti-Fraud Office, is investigating the municipality of Petrich for alleged misuse of € 750,000 allocated to repair an already non-existing building. The project is co-financed by a program for cross-border cooperation between Bulgaria and Greece. The money was received to repair the former border police premises and to make the building a museum.
Bulgaria's government on August 7 allocated BGN 100,000 to the Ministry of Culture for the excavations of the ancient city of Heraclea Sintica near Rupite. The state has already provided BGN 1.5 million for excavation and construction of roads to the site. The ancient city is the most visited tourist site in Southwestern Bulgaria, reports BNT.
An earthquake of magnitude 3 on the Richter scale is registered in the region of the village of Skrut, Municipality of Petrich.
The quake was at 14.32 hrs Bulgarian time, according to the site of the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography (NIGGG) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
The southwestern town of Petrich marked Bulgaria's national holiday on Thursday with a procession on the occasion of the 138thanniversary of the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule.
The procession was the first of its kind and was organised under the initiative of the youth formation of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation (VMRO).
Angel Bozhilov, the employer of Petko Sertov, former head of Bulgaria's National Security Agency (DANS), who mysteriously disappeared last Friday, denied any involvement in the incident.
Bozhilov told the bTV national channel Sertov's disappearance might have something to do with his former position as DANS head, but said he did not have information in this regard.
