Swedish tourist injured in Rethymno bar brawl 

A 33-year-old tourist from Sweden was hospitalised with head injuries overnight following a brawl at a bar in the town of Rethymno, Crete.

The incident occurred when the tourist and two local men started arguing, for unknown reasons. The argument turned into a fight and the Swedish man was hit on the head, according to cretapost.gr. 

Big seaplane plans for Crete

Greek Water Airports announced on Wednesday it has applied for the creation of a water aerodrome at Agia Galini in the prefecture of Rethymno in southern Crete. 

It also said that the Port Fund of Hania has submitted an application for the creation of a water aerodrome at the port of Kissamos, selecting Greek Water Airports as the contractor.

The Museum of Ancient Eleutherna's temporary exhibition "Cretan Cities: The Testimony of the Coins" showcases Cretan history through a collection of ancient coins. The exhibit, organized by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Rethymno, the University of Crete and the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, includes 124 ancient coins and a detailed catalogue in Greek and English.

Man who dragged dog with car arrested in Crete

A 73-year-old man was arrested in the town of Rethymno on the island of Crete for tying a dog to the back of his car and dragging it along a road.

The man, who faces charges of animal cruelty, was tracked down by police after a witness posted a photo of the incident, showing the vehicle's license plate, on social media.

Firefighters douse blaze in Rethymno, Crete

Firefighters managed to douse a blaze that broke out in the prefecture of Rethymno on Crete on Sunday afternoon in the area of Lefkogeia but not before it had ravaged dozens of hectares of land. 

The blaze was brought under control in the early hours of Monday morning thanks to the efforts of 75 firefighters and 25 engines.  

Man held for strangling father to death on Christmas Day

Police on Crete on Friday remanded in custody a 34-year-old man who on Christmas Day strangled his 61-year-old father to death in his home in the area of Fortezza in the city of Rethymno.

According to the 34-year-old's lawyer, the attack was an "accident" that followed a heated dispute between the two men.

Crete SYRIZA office catches fire

A fire broke out at offices of the ruling SYRIZA party in the town of Rethymno on Crete early Saturday morning.

The blaze started on the second floor of a building on Zimvrakaki Street and was brought under control by six firemen with the assistance of two fire engines.

It was not clear what started the fire. No one was injured.
