Stratonikeia

A total of 12 gladiator graves uncovered in the western ancient city of Stratonikeia have been put on display at the entrance of the city in the Mu?la province, located in western Turkey. 

The head of the Stratonikeia's excavations, Prof. Bilal Sö?üt, told reporters that Stratonikeia was known as the "city of love and gladiators."

This year's excavations at the ancient city of Stratonikeia, which is located in the western province of Mu?la's Yata?an district and on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage Site list, have unearthed many Byzantine-era tombs. The ancient city is considered one of the world's largest marble cities. 

Ten new cultural and natural Turkish heritage sites have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. 

The latest excavation season has ended in the ancient city of Stratonikeia in the western province of Mu?la's Yata?an district. Professor Bilal Sö?üt, head of the excavations, said they had worked for some six months in 2014 with 50 academics and workers.

The remains of a 300-year-old Ottoman paint shop, which has been discovered at the site of the ancient city of Stratonikeia in the western province of Muğla's Yatağan district, will soon be opened to tourists.

The Hasan Şar House, a century-old building that has served as an excavation house and museum depot in the ancient city of Stratonikeia in the western province of Muğla’s Yatağan, will be restored by the Muğla Municipality and turned into a museum.
