Australia lifts key interest rate, flags further rises

Australia's central bank hiked interest rates to an 11-year high yesterday and warned that further rises may be on the horizon to get surging prices under control.

The Reserve Bank of Australia lifted the key rate 25 basis points to 4.1 percent, its highest level since May 2012, with governor Philip Lowe saying inflation had "passed its peak" but was still stubbornly high.

World number three Ruud, Kvitova cruise at United Cup

World number three Casper Ruud cruised past Thiago Monteiro in straight sets but it was in vain as Norway crashed in their mixed teams United Cup tie against Brazil in Brisbane on Jan. 1.

After the Brazilians won both opening singles rubbers on Dec. 31, Ruud's 6-3, 6-2 victory brought his country back into contention.

Norway’s Foss wins cycling world time-trial crown

Norway's Tobias Foss pulled off a huge upset to dethrone two-time defending champion Filippo Ganna and claim a maiden time-trial title at cycling's road world championships in Australia on Sept. 18.

The 25-year-old conquered the 34.2-kilometer circuit in 40 minutes 02.78 seconds to edge Swiss powerhouse Stefan Kung by 2.95 seconds.
