Thessaloniki also known as Thessalonica, Salonika or Salonica, is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of the region of Macedonia. Greeks consider it like συμπρωτεύουσα (the associated-capital) of the Northern Greece. Indeed, Thessaloniki was already the largest city of the Byzantine Empire after Constantinople.

Man arrested over online travel deal scam
A 31-year-old man in the northern port city of Thessaloniki was facing fraud charges for developing an online travel deal scam.
According to initial reports the suspect posted an announcement on a social networking website regarding a supposedly organized trip for two to a European country.

Kaminis and Boutaris hold seats but other key municipalities change hands
Giorgos Kaminis and Yiannis Boutaris retained the mayorships of Athens and Thessaloniki in the second round of local elections on Sunday but there were changes in key Greek cities.
Patra, Greeces third largest city, was won by Communist Party candidate Costas Peletidis. In Iraklio, Crete, independent hopeful Vassilis Lambrinos beat PASOK-backed incumbent Yiannis Kourakis.
Kaminis, Boutaris keep mayoral seats
Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis appeared to have held on to his seat in local authority elections after his leftist challenger conceded defeat, although the race for Attica governor remained too close to call late on Sunday night while a number of independents beat government-backed candidates in other key seats.

Illegal cigarettes seized in Thessaloniki warehouse
Members of the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) confiscated over 1.3 million packs of contraband cigarettes in a warehouse located the area of Kalochori, near the northern port city of Thessaloniki on Tuesday, Greek police said in a statement on Wednesday.
A truck bearing Bulgarian plates and heating devices were also discovered in the warehouse, according to early reports.
