Two tons of rejected vegetables feed 5,000 Greeks

More than 5,000 Greeks have eaten over 2 tons of fruit and vegetables rejected by food stores in an event that highlighted the waste of food in advanced societies.

People lined up in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki on Sunday to eat briam, a medley of vegetables cooked in large casseroles, as well as crepes and fruit salads.

Train derailment disrupts rail services in central Greece

Train services between Athens and Thessaloniki were disrupted on Saturday when several wagons from a cargo train derailed at Lilaia station near Amfikleia in central Greece.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

The wagons were empty.

A bus service was introduced to serve travelers while the damage to the track was repaired.

Papageorgopoulos due back in court on Wednesday

A Thessaloniki court is on Wednesday to hear the trial of former mayor of Thessaloniki, Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, who faces charges of money laundering.

The 67-year-old, who is serving a 12-year sentence at nearby Diavata Prison for embezzling nearly 18 million euros from municipal coffers, underwent surgery after suffering a heart attack early last month.

Church of Greece forbids services for the cremated

The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece has instructed its priests not to conduct funeral or memorial services for people who have chosen to be cremated after their death.

“The incineration of the body is not in keeping with the practice and tradition of the Church for theological, canonical and anthropological reasons,” the Synod said in a statement.
